The Extension chair is a translation of how a chair is used.
Vrooland draws on the manners and customes of how we use a chair, transforming it into a coathanger seat. What Vrooland intrigues is that technology, craftmanship, storytelling and the actual physical contact all comes together in thie one design: a chair.
"Through research into the history and origin a designer is able to influence the future by giving opportunities to translate the use and perception of a product in a good way."
After graduating cum laude at ArtEZ in 2010 with his collection ‘Revised Crafts’ Sjoerd Vroonland (1985) wanted to focus on only one thing: designing contemporary chairs. The collection of design label Vroonland is reminiscent of authentic design treasures – it reflects both what they used to be and what they still are today. The strength lies in the encounter between materials. Between framework and lampshade, between table and leg, the materials are uncompromised and the line of work can be clearly seen. Instead of hiding all the technical detailing, the designer focuses on the beauty of structure. The result is as sober as it is poetic and makes the furniture even more engaging.
